Why would I need a dental extraction?

Dental extractions can become necessary if a tooth has incurred an excessive amount of damage and it cannot be restored with a root canal, dental crown, or other restorative procedure. If a tooth is crowding or damaging other teeth, it may be easier to remove the tooth, and sometimes dental extractions are required for orthodontic treatment plans. If a tooth is impacted, it may need to be surgically removed to avoid an infection or a cyst, as is often the case for wisdom teeth. We try to avoid removing natural teeth as much as possible, so if we recommend a dental extraction, it’s likely your best option.

Are dental extractions painful?

Dental extractions are among the more invasive treatment options, but thanks to advancements in modern medicine and dentistry, tooth extraction procedures are not painful. Our team always uses a local anesthetic to numb the teeth and gums before a tooth is extracted. Patients are likely to feel some pressure during the procedure, but they shouldn’t feel pain. If you are nervous about having one or more teeth removed, or you always experience dental anxiety no matter what, our team offers several options for dental sedation that can help your treatment feel much more calm and relaxed.

What is aftercare like for a dental extraction?

After you have a tooth removed, we recommend taking it easy for a few days and avoiding strenuous activities. Too much activity can cause the blood clot in the socket to come loose, which can cause a painful complication called a dry socket. Before your appointment, you should stock up on soft foods that require very little to no chewing, like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes, as well as pain medication and an ice pack. Our team will go over aftercare instructions for your specific treatment plan, and if you have any questions or concerns for our team, you are welcome and encouraged to reach out and ask.
