What is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull and allows you to speak, chew, and yawn. TMD (temporomandibular disorder) describes problems affecting this joint, the surrounding muscles, or both. These conditions can develop from teeth grinding, jaw misalignment, arthritis, stress, or injury, and may interfere with normal jaw movement and everyday comfort.
What are common TMJ symptoms?
Common TMJ symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, headaches, earaches, and facial pain. Patients may also experience limited jaw movement, locking of the jaw, or discomfort while chewing. Symptoms can vary in severity and may worsen with stress, clenching, or prolonged jaw use.
