What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull and allows you to speak, chew, and yawn. TMD (temporomandibular disorder) describes problems affecting this joint, the surrounding muscles, or both. These conditions can develop from teeth grinding, jaw misalignment, arthritis, stress, or injury, and may interfere with normal jaw movement and everyday comfort.

What are common TMJ symptoms?

Common TMJ symptoms include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, headaches, earaches, and facial pain. Patients may also experience limited jaw movement, locking of the jaw, or discomfort while chewing. Symptoms can vary in severity and may worsen with stress, clenching, or prolonged jaw use.

What happens if TMJ is left untreated?

If left untreated, TMJ problems can worsen over time, leading to chronic jaw pain, frequent headaches, and increased difficulty eating or speaking. Ongoing joint stress may cause permanent damage to the jaw joint, muscle strain, or bite changes. Untreated TMJ can also contribute to neck and shoulder pain, reduced quality of life, and persistent discomfort.

How is TMJ treated by a dentist?

Our team treats TMJ by first evaluating your bite, jaw movement, and symptoms. Treatment may include a custom mouth guard for TMJ to reduce clenching and grinding, bite adjustments, and recommendations for jaw exercises. In some cases, stress management, anti-inflammatory therapies, or referrals for physical therapy or a TMJ specialist may be suggested to relieve pain and restore normal jaw function.
