What are my options for dental sedation?

  • Nitrous Oxide — Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a safe and gentle way to help patients relax during dental treatment. It is inhaled through a small mask and wears off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after your appointment. Nitrous oxide is a great option for patients with mild dental anxiety.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation — Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your dental appointment to help you feel calm and at ease. While you will remain awake and able to respond, you may feel very relaxed or even drowsy during treatment. This option is ideal for patients with moderate anxiety or those needing longer procedures.
  • IV Sedation — IV sedation provides deep relaxation during dental procedures by delivering medication directly into the bloodstream. You will remain conscious but very sleepy and may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. IV sedation is often recommended for patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing complex treatments.

Am I a candidate for dental sedation?

Most patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or complex treatment needs are good candidates for dental sedation. During your consultation, we’ll review your medical history and discuss the best, safest sedation option to keep you comfortable throughout your visit. Should you have any questions or concerns for our team at any time, please don’t hesitate to let us know, as patient safety is our top priority.

What are the side effects of dental sedation?

The side effects of dental sedation vary depending on the type used. Nitrous oxide usually wears off quickly with minimal side effects, like mild dizziness. Oral conscious sedation and IV sedation may cause drowsiness, delayed reaction times, and temporary memory loss. Some patients may also feel groggy for a few hours post-appointment. We will review all possible side effects with you beforehand to ensure your experience is as safe and comfortable as possible.

Can I return to my normal routine after receiving sedation?

It depends on the type of sedation you receive. If you use nitrous oxide, you can usually return to your normal activities the same day. However, with oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, you will likely feel drowsy and will need someone to drive you home. We typically recommend resting for the remainder of the day and avoiding activities like driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions until the effects fully wear off.
