Some patients become aware of their bruxism due to someone in their household letting them know that they grind their teeth at night. In other cases, it can be trickier to diagnose bruxism. If you frequently wake up in the morning with a sore jaw, that may be a sign that you are clenching or grinding your teeth while sleeping. Physical evidence, like tooth damage or receding gums, can indicate that regular teeth grinding is occurring. Our team can examine your teeth and gums to help determine if a custom mouthguard is the right treatment option for you.
Because a custom mouthguard is molded around the unique shape of a patient’s teeth, dental impressions will need to be taken. This can be done at the end of a routine visit, or we can schedule a short appointment for you to come in and have impressions done. Then, they will be sent to an offsite lab, and our team will receive your custom oral appliance in approximately one to two weeks. We will schedule another quick visit for you to try it on and make any additional adjustments, and then you are free to take it home and begin using it!
Custom oral appliances tend to be more of a financial investment than one-size mouthguards. However, we find that patients are more likely to wear custom nightguards, which means patients are less likely to incur dental trauma, which can often be costly to repair.
