Dental Implants 101

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are placed directly into the jawbone. They create a stable foundation for replacement teeth to connect to at the gum line. Implants are a permanent restorative treatment that has revolutionized tooth replacement. Whether you’re missing one tooth or many, implants can give you back a beautiful, healthy, fully functioning smile once more.

The Implant Process

implant process 1

Our experienced team will place the implant(s) directly into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth or teeth. The implant(s) mimic a natural tooth root.

implant process 2

Since implants are biocompatible, we’ll wait for the implant(s) to fuse with the jawbone before proceeding to the restoration phase.

implant process 3

Once the area is completely healed, we’ll attach a connective piece (abutment) to the implant(s) to prepare for the tooth restoration.

implant process 4

Depending on how many teeth you’re replacing, we’ll attach the crown, bridge, or denture to the implants. The restorations will fit over your implant and blend in with your surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re a candidate for dental implants, you will quickly discover that dental implants usually require more than one visit and collaboration between you and our experienced dentists. The first step of the dental implant procedure involves the implant surgery. This may last anywhere from an hour to three hours, depending on how many implants you need and their location. After the implant surgery, the healing process takes three to six months, allowing the jawbone to integrate with the implants. Once healed, permanent teeth are attached, and the dental implant procedure is complete!

One of our experienced dentists in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, or Hayden will work together with you to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. We will complete an evaluation of your oral health, including the conditions of your gums, teeth, and supporting structures. We may also evaluate your oral habits, like whether or not you smoke or grind your teeth. In some cases, a bone graft may be required before dental implant surgery to ensure the implants have a secure anchor.

Dental implant surgery is very successful and predictable. The key to a successful dental implant surgery is to have healthy gums and bones and be in good health. Dental implants are the closest restorative dentistry option you can get to healthy, natural teeth.

During the healing phase, dental implants fuse with the jawbone and become part of the jaw itself. This is also known as osseointegration. While osseointegration can take a few months, once a solid bond is formed, it can last for a lifetime. Diet, accidents, and your health and oral hygiene routine can affect dental implant longevity.

It’s not unusual to experience discomfort or pain after the dental implant procedure. In most cases, discomfort will subside within 3 to 5 days after your treatment. By the end of the first week post-surgery, you should feel little, if any, discomfort or pain. If you experience otherwise, we encourage you to reach out to our office.

You will be given post-op instructions to care for your dental implants after surgery. In most cases, it takes 2 weeks for patients to fully recover and return to their normal brushing and eating. In 2 weeks, most patients are fully recovered, but the implant will continue to heal and bond with the jaw over the following 3 to 6 months!

Immediately after your implant procedure, you will likely require several follow-up appointments as your implants heal. After successful healing, our team may recommend visits every 3 to 6 months to ensure you’re adjusting and caring well for your dental implants.

Dental implants offer many benefits for individuals with missing teeth. However, smoking, teeth grinding, and other lifestyle habits can compromise their success. You can prevent this from happening by maintaining good oral hygiene, visiting our dentist regularly, and using nightguards.
