Did you know that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss among American adults? Now for the good news: gum disease is often preventable, or reversible if caught early. To help ensure your gums are healthy and strong for years to come, our Riverstone Dental Care team has put together this list of tips for reversing gum disease.

1. Keep Up with Regular Visits to the Dentist

Most adults should see the dentist every six months for professional cleanings and exams. In general, regular visits are a great way for our team to keep an eye on any potential oral health issues before they develop into serious problems. When it comes to reversing gum disease, regular visits are even more important. Our team can monitor the health of your gums and perform any interventions necessary to keep gum disease from progressing further.

2. Know the Warning Signs

It is important to know the early warning signs of gum disease so you can treat it right away. Keep an eye out for gums that are red, swollen, or especially tender. If your gums start to bleed easily, this may be a sign of early gum disease. The sooner you detect gum disease, the sooner treatment and reversal can begin.

3. Practice Good Oral Hygiene at Home

Your at-home oral hygiene routine is vital when it comes to treating and reversing gum disease. Make sure you’re brushing your teeth twice daily, for two minutes each time. When you brush, take care that you’re brushing gently – vigorous brushing can damage enamel and irritate the gums. In addition, be sure you’re flossing once each day. Flossing removes food that gets trapped in between teeth, where oral bacteria love to feed.
