4 Tips For Better Nighttime Oral Hygiene

Most people have some sort of nighttime self care routine. Some people have a skin care regimen. Others may have a few things they always do to wind down from the day and sleep better. Taking proper care of your smile is another form of self-care, and it’s crucial for maintaining your overall wellness. Here are some tips for upping your dental care at night.

1. Remember to Floss

When nighttime rolls around, sometimes you probably feel exhausted from the day and are ready to hit the pillow. However, even if you’re tired, make sure to floss as well as brush your teeth. Flossing will remove the food particles that may be stuck between your teeth. It’s an extra step in your routine but it’s an important one for preventing cavities and keeping gum disease at bay.

2. Brush After Any Midnight Snacks

Is your stomach rumbling late at night? We’re not here to tell you when or what to eat. However, we do want to encourage you to always brush your teeth after you’ve finished eating for the day. Brushing before you go to bed will ensure there are no food particles left in your mouth overnight. While you sleep is prime time for bad bacteria and plaque to build up on your teeth. Even if you’ve already brushed your teeth for the day and have a very light snack, it’s still a good idea to brush again.

3. Clean Your Tongue Too

People may remember to brush their teeth and floss their gums, but oftentimes, they forget to brush their tongue. Bacteria hangs out around your teeth and gums, but it can also be found on your tongue. Give your tongue a light scrub with your toothbrush or use a tongue scraper before you go to bed to make sure you’ve hit all important spots for a clean smile.

4. Put in Retainers or Nightguard

This tip won’t apply to everyone, but it’s important for many of you! If you’ve completed orthodontic treatment, then you have a set of retainers to wear every night while you sleep. If you grind your teeth, then you may have a custom nightguard that’s meant to prevent any extra wear and tear. In both of these cases, it’s important that you wear the dental gear you have been given to protect your dental health. You don’t want your teeth to shift out of place or for your teeth to suffer additional damage!
