Caring for Your Child’s Mouth After a Pulled Tooth

Did your child just have a tooth pulled? Maybe there was some crowding and they needed a tooth removed to make sure all the teeth could be aligned properly. Maybe their wisdom teeth were extracted because they weren’t erupting correctly. Whatever the reason, chances are they could really use some extra love and care as they recover from the procedure. Here are some ways you can help take care of your child’s mouth after a tooth is pulled.

Make Sure They Rest

Sometimes it can be hard to tell our child to slow down and get the rest they need. After their tooth extraction, they may feel like they’re all ready to head out and play, but it’s crucial they get a sufficient amount of rest. In the 24 hours after the procedure, clear their schedule, keep their activities to a minimum, and make sure they get plenty of sleep. That general rest will help the mouth heal.

Feed Them the Right Foods

After a tooth extraction, your child should be eating soft foods so as not to disturb the treatment site. Some foods you can prepare include smoothies, milkshakes, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, yogurt, and warm soup. You’ll also want to make sure they’re not sneaking any crunchy or hard snacks that could set back their healing process!

Administer the Right Pain Medication

Your child may be experiencing some discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. If it’s painful for them, you can administer the prescription pain medication that the dentist gave you or over-the-counter pain medicine that’s specifically for children. Always make sure you’re following the dosage instructions on the package!
